McDonalds has millions of customers but I don't go there if I want a nice steak. Why do you think the EVE players are in EVE and not WOW?
The MMORPG's that have tried to emulates WOW and failed are numerous and there is a reason for that. There are two types of player:
1. Gamers - these want a challenge. EVE gives that but does not try and be everything to everyone. That's not possible or desirable. If it becomes popularised by dumbing down it will die very fast. CCP know that. WOW itself has changed even in the last year to a game I do not recognise because of these non gamers crowding in. Not one of my old friends plays it any more. It's a victim of the marketing department where everyone must be a winner, do you really want a game like that? That's not a game at all. It's as much fun as dressing up my own dolly.
2. Non Gamers - these do not want a challenge and want access to everything everyone else has (Blizz has removed or made irrelevant all unique class abilities and game mechanics to achieve this). Their motives to play are alien to many of us (gear, mounts, gimmicks, fluff, simple game mechanics, easy access to all content and no consequences to your actions) They play WOW or one of its clones. Nothing wrong with that but it's not the market EVE is aimed for. Its also not the sort of player I wish to associate with any more in an on line game which is why I no longer play WOW.
I think EVE PVP sucks as well but not because its brutal, I just think its boring being in a blob or camp and griefing someone else is the ultimate in tedium for me. But many like that so good for them.
Try not to judge others by your standards, realise many people play games for different reasons and to try and homogeneous everyone into one type of player (like a WOW player) is ignorant and patronising.
This sums up my feelings very well.

Originally by: Malande Sense of "fairness" is one of the biggest problems with todays societies that and this ******ed sense of entitlement so HTFU *sigh*
Uh, "fairness" is pretty much the entire idea behind civilization or society. If you want to run around hacking people with a machete or stealing from them you'll soon find yourself executed or jailed, because it's not fair to just do what you want to people. Societies can only exist through mutual understandings that we'll all be fair to eachother, and we have laws and such which outline what fairness is.
Um, no... it's going on in many other ways... as in economics/markets, corporations preying on weaker ones, etc. It's not all about pew pew... that's why I love this game.

Originally by: Caroll Yanaki Yes, the OP is correct in several of his arguments.
1. EVE interface is very heavy and unfriendly. 2. EVE takes tons of time to learn, I think everyone would agree to that - you have to spend tons of your time reading guides, forums and asking other players for help. 3. Tutorials don't tell you jack about EVE's true nature - the darkness and the unfairness we all adore. Well, at least, those who stay after the trial period. 4. I think 9 out of each 10 players never subscribe after the trial. The game is really hardcore and requires too much time and efforts to be learned. Sometimes it doesn't give you positive emotions at all. You get be humiliated, people make fun of you in forums and in youtube. They grief you, harrass you, smacktalk you, every time they have a chance.
And I think it's because of the very nature of the game. 300,000 active people since 2003 is really a small number for an MMO, IMHO. Considering EVE's gameplay is the most unique of them all. But this gameplay is VERY VERY high-end hardware demanding. I suppose CCP doesn't find the server's hardware very easy. A vertical-structured single cluster cannot support the WoW's players quantity. 10000 people in Jita? 7-8000+ people in the big mission hubs? 100-200+ people in each 0.0 local?
Impossible. And I think that CCP knows that and deliberately limits its player base by sifting the new players through a hard opening. Just a thought...
I think you're wrong on the UI and Tutorials, I had no problem with either one. I learned as I went and I listened and a lot of things in the game were intuitive and easy for me, hence I obviously stayed in the game and love it. I suppose by your perspective and obviously the OP, you are both mentally handicapped in some way. Be it ADHD or lack of basic cognitive skills.

Originally by: Captain Jack Tuscan had a few good points. And quite a few people who replied here, why do you have to be such a morons? Is EVE some sort of an escape for you? Little niche where you can live your low, backstabbing life? Why don't you go get stoned or get drunk as you usually do and get yourself another noob ganked at the gate camp?
Speaking about pathetic, I'd say people who justify their low actions and hide their real nature behind the game mechanics - are even more pathetic than those noobs who play in safe sectors.
Pot calling the kettle black? Move along citizen.

Originally by: Neamus Actually thats quite an interesting idea, why not change insurance a bit?
Change it so that...
You can only take insurance out on "civilian ships" like industrials and miners. I doubt that many armed forces insure their tanks, do they?
New players can have it on every ship type for a limited period, say.. 6 months? After that you're in the same boat as everyone else.
Oh and a few changes to 0.0 would be nice too. Like get rid of local altogether, unless you're in a home or ally sov system and there's a module up. Or even pass it on to a gang link style ship mod? A dedicated intel ship?
Interesting idea, though the military (in eve) uses "Industrials" as well as other ships that you would claim would be "civilian".
